HelloBaby

The nation's first free-standing, free, drop-in play space for babies & toddlers.

Why you'll go

A nonprofit "leveling the playing field" — free, warm, and built for their exact age. Free + warm + drop-in is a rare, good-hearted trifecta.

What they'll love

Little ones get a room engineered for them: a collaborative slate art wall low enough for the youngest hands to scribble on, rainbow toddler-height toy cubbies they can raid themselves, tactile flooring that maps out play zones, and a cozy nook at the front window for tummy time. Out back, in warm months, there's the seasonal Fairy Garden in the Orchard of the Ancestors next door — a Native American fruit orchard where staff hand-craft and install miniature fairy houses tucked among the plants, with real dirt to dig in.

Real talk

Mon–Fri 9am–4pm (last entry 3pm), always free, ages 0–3. A caregiver stays; ~2-hour max stay. Friday story hour.

Don't miss

  • The Fairy Garden in the Orchard of the Ancestors A seasonal outdoor playspace HelloBaby builds with Blacks in Green (BIG) each warm season, set in The Orchard of the Ancestors — a Native American fruit orchard owned and cultivated by BIG, kitty-corner from the building. Staff hand-craft and install interactive miniature 'fairy houses' among the plants for kids to discover; the 2024 theme was Winnie the Pooh's '100 Acre Woods.' It's built so toddlers can put their hands in the dirt, listen to the birds, and explore nature safely. It's outdoors and weather-dependent, so it runs in the warm months only, with an opening day kicking off the season in June (June 8 in 2024). The orchard is a short walk from the main building, not inside it.
  • A weekday morning program, not just open play Beyond free open play, HelloBaby runs a rotating free weekly schedule: Spanish & English Circle Time (Monday), Read Aloud (Tuesday), Exploring Sign Language with Ms. Shay (Thursday), and Broadway Story Time with Stages Chicago (Friday), plus music with Miss Amelia and occasional visits from a therapy dog. Programs are tied to specific weekdays, so check the current week's schedule if you're aiming for a particular class. Story time with Stages Chicago lands on Fridays.
  • 'Ask the Doctor' with a pediatrician On the first Monday of the month, board-certified pediatrician Dr. Damian McGee comes in for an 'Ask the Doctor' session where caregivers can ask child-development questions in person or online, woven right into normal play time. It's the first Monday of the month — plan around that date if you've got questions you've been meaning to ask.
  • Laura's Library and the front-window nook There's an in-house book collection called Laura's Library (free books during open hours) plus a Little Free Library out front, and a cozy nook at the front window built for tummy time. Adults and kids both need socks to enter the play area, so tuck a pair in your bag — no socks can mean no play.
