Chicago With Kids

A weekend paced for short legs and nap windows: Lincoln Park Zoo, Millennium Park's Crown Fountain, the Riverwalk, and the lakefront — short hops between durable, kid-proof public spaces.

Saturday

  1. Morning — Lincoln Park Zoo · Lincoln Park

Free admission, no tickets, open daily — the easiest kid win in the city. Arrive at opening when the animals are most active and the paths are quiet.

  2. Midday — Lincoln Park playgrounds & South Pond · Lincoln Park

Stay in the park: playgrounds, the South Pond Nature Boardwalk, and shaded lawns for a picnic and a reset before the afternoon.

  3. Afternoon — North Avenue Beach · Lincoln Park

Walk east to the lakefront. Sand, shallow shoreline play, and a flat paved path for strollers and scooters. Free and open — bring water and shade.

Sunday

  1. Morning — Crown Fountain & Maggie Daley Park · Loop

Millennium Park's Crown Fountain is a free splash-pad in summer; Maggie Daley Park's play garden is right across the footbridge. Both are purpose-built for kids and free.

  2. Midday — Cloud Gate & the Riverwalk · Loop

See Cloud Gate ("The Bean"), then walk down to the Riverwalk for boat-spotting and wide, stroller-friendly paths along the water.

  3. Afternoon — Museum Campus lakefront · Near South Side

Finish with open lakefront space at the Museum Campus — room to run, skyline views, and an easy walk or bus back downtown when energy runs out.

This route is built around durable civic places, not a promise of live admission. Check current hours, reservations, weather, and transit alerts before going.
