Beats, Gothic Arches and a Halloweekend Warm-Up

A gray-sky Saturday built for loud rooms and quiet detours — plus the dark-music festival to circle for next weekend.

Chicago is wearing its late-October gray this weekend — overcast skies, a high around 68 today and a milder 72 on Sunday, with barely a hint of rain. It is the kind of flat-light fall day that is easy to spend indoors or out, and the calendar is already tilting toward Halloweekend. Here is where to point yourself, from a hip-hop orchestra in Uptown to a free beat-making session on the South Side, plus the dark-music festival worth circling for next weekend.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24

Thee Phantom and The Illharmonic Orchestra @ Riviera Theatre

Thee Phantom builds his show on an idea most rappers never try: a full live orchestra behind the turntables. With co-creator and vocalist The Phoenix, the Illharmonic Orchestra pairs raw hip-hop lyricism and DJ turntablism with strings, horns, woodwinds and piano — a mash-up that is as much concert hall as it is block party.

It lands at the Riviera Theatre, a historic Uptown room completed in 1917 by the architecture firm Rapp & Rapp and originally built as a movie theater. The show starts at 7:30 PM, and the listing marks it all-ages — a rare night out that does not card at the door.

Beatmaker's Toolbox @ Steelworkers Park

This one is a genuine Chicago original: a free celebration of the city's beatmaking culture that sets up in the parks. Curated by B4Lasers and UniqMoniq as part of the Park District's Night Climb series, Beatmaker's Toolbox runs live beat sets, production demos and hands-on workshops rooted in hip hop, soul and sample-based music.

It is free and listed all-ages, running 5 to 8 PM at Steelworkers Park on the far South Side lakefront (87th at South Lake Shore Drive). Come to listen or come to learn — the whole point is putting local producers and curious neighbors in the same place.

Saint Ita: A French Gothic Masterpiece @ Saint Ita Church

Edgewater's Saint Ita is one of those buildings plenty of Chicagoans pass without clocking what is inside. This guided tour, led by Catholic Church Tours and St. Gregory's Hall, walks you through the French Gothic church that architect Henry J. Schlacks considered the culmination of his career when it was finished in 1927 — he built a dozen Chicago churches, and this was his crescendo.

The numbers do the talking: a 120-foot exterior tower cut from 1,800 tons of Bedford limestone, 200,000 individual pieces of stained glass, and an organ with 4,200 pipes. The tour runs 10 to 11:30 AM at the church, 5500 N. Broadway. It is a $35 suggested donation, and advance registration is required — this is not a walk-up.

Chicago Bulls vs. Washington Wizards @ United Center

For a plug-and-play Saturday night, the Bulls host the Washington Wizards at the United Center. The listing marks a 7 PM start at the West Loop arena (1901 W. Madison). Grab tickets through the link and you are set — no further planning required.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25

Bryn Mawr Makers Mart @ Bryn Mawr Historic District

Sunday's low-key move is the Bryn Mawr Makers Mart, a collaborative, multi-shop market run by a trio of queer-owned micro-businesses and neighbors — Solar Intentions, Roots & Ritual and Transistor Chicago — in Edgewater's Bryn Mawr Historic District. This weekend's edition leans spooky for the season.

It is free to enter and drop-in, running 11 AM to 6 PM at 1052-8 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. No ticket, no plan — just wander the vendors.

Park 598 Grand Opening @ Old Town

Old Town gets a new patch of public space this weekend, and the neighborhood is throwing it a party. Park 598's grand opening runs Sunday from 1 to 4 PM — a chance to be among the first to christen the spot.

ON THE HORIZON

Sanctum Dark Music Festival @ Thalia Hall

Looking ahead to Halloweekend, Sanctum returns for another weekend of dark music, dancing and community — this year taking over Thalia Hall and its downstairs piano lounge, the Tack Room, in Pilsen. The festival leans into the details: extra sound support from Big Audio, curated decor, and an 'ALL VIP' ticketing concept that puts every attendee on the same level of access.

It runs Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, with sets starting at 7 PM and tickets from $46. Thalia Hall sits at 1807 S. Allport, and the Pink Line to 18th is your train. If a goth-leaning Halloween night is your speed, this is the weekend's one to circle.
