Clear Skies, Close-Up Magic and a Trans Pride Debut

Your daily guide to what's popping in Chicago

By Raj Singh · Published October 5, 2026.

Clear skies and a crisp 60-degree Monday — the first full week of October is the kind of weather that makes you want to be out after dark. Tonight leans intimate and indoors: a solo piano set downtown, close-up magic up north, a beginner's AI class on the South Side and neighborhood trivia in Edgewater. Tomorrow the mercury nudges up to a mild 67 and the MCA throws its doors open free for Illinois residents. And come Friday, a first-of-its-kind celebration lands in a West Side park. Here's where we'd point you.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 5

Ludovico Einaudi: Solo Piano @ Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Ludovico Einaudi brings a solo piano set to Symphony Center tonight — just the composer and the keys, no orchestra between you and the music. It starts at 7:30 PM at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's hall on South Michigan Avenue. It's a stripped-back format where the whole evening rests on one pianist and one piano.

AI Made Simple @ Chicago Bee Library

Curious about ChatGPT but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly class at the Chicago Bee branch library on 3647 S State St walks you through using AI tools for writing, organizing, creativity and everyday tasks. It's led by Dr. Sanja Rickette Stinson, an AI strategist, educator and author. It runs 2 to 4 PM this afternoon and is aimed at adults 18 and up; registration is required, so reserve a spot before you head over.

The Close-Up Show @ Chicago Magic Lounge

For something lower-key and a little mysterious, the Chicago Magic Lounge up on North Clark Street hosts The Close-Up Show tonight at 7:30 PM. As the name promises, this is sleight-of-hand at arm's length — the kind of magic that plays out inches from you rather than from a distant stage.

Trivia I @ Beard & Belly

Start the month with a low-stakes brain workout: Trivia I takes over Beard & Belly in Edgewater (6157 N Broadway) tonight from 8 to 9:30 PM, hosted by Stewpendous Productions. It's free to play — you just need to grab something from the bar or kitchen while you compete.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6

Free Museum Day @ Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art is free for Illinois residents every Tuesday, and tomorrow is your window. The galleries run 10 AM to 9 PM in Streeterville (220 E Chicago Ave) — a low-commitment way to spend a mild 67-degree fall day among big, current art, and the late hours make it an after-work option too.

Sidetrack OUTspoken LGBTQ Stories @ Sidetrack

On the first Tuesday of every month, Sidetrack in Lakeview hands its mainbar over to OUTspoken!, a long-running LGBTQ storytelling night. Doors are at 6 PM with stories starting at 7, and there's no cover. WBEZ's Afternoon Shift called it "consistently great stories and it's ground-breaking," and the format is simple: real people, real stories, a drink in hand.

ON THE HORIZON

Transilience: Chicago Trans Pride Festival @ Eckhart Park

The one to put on the calendar for later this week: Transilience, billed as Chicago's first Trans Pride Festival, lands at Eckhart Park (1330 W Chicago Ave) on Friday, October 9 from 5 to 7 PM. It's free and all ages, and the Park District calls it "the first of its kind" — a celebration of trans, nonbinary and gender non-conforming Chicagoans from the North, South and West sides.

The programming leans maximalist in the best way: dance, drag, music, DJs, circus, puppeteering, standup and sketch comedy, live painting, flow arts and fashion. If you want one thing this week you won't find anywhere else in the city, make it this.
