Chicago is baking today — 97°F and clear, the kind of heat that makes the lake look less like scenery and more like a life raft. The move is simple: duck into somewhere air-conditioned tonight, or head for the water and evening cool. And keep one eye on the calendar, because Labor Day weekend is stacked. Here's where to point yourself over the next few days.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3

Isaiah Rashad: Lil Sunny's Awful Road Trip @ The Salt Shed

Isaiah Rashad brings his Lil Sunny's Awful Road Trip Tour to The Salt Shed Indoors tonight, with Alemeda opening. The Chattanooga rapper and longtime TDE signee has always been the quiet craftsman of that roster — less flash, more couch-philosopher — and his live shows lean into that hazy, unhurried pocket. Show is at 6:30PM, tickets $66 and up.

The Salt Shed's indoor room is a converted piece of the old Morton Salt plant, with high ceilings, clean sightlines, and — crucially on a 97°F night — air conditioning. It's in West Town at 1357 N Elston, on the edge of the Goose Island strip; grab dinner along Milwaukee Avenue first, sort your parking or ride ahead, and hydrate hard before doors.

Reclaimed Timber @ River Park

One of the more quietly spectacular free things happening tonight: Reclaimed Timber, a Beyond This Point production, takes over River Park at 7:30PM as part of the Park District's Night Out in the Parks series. Six percussionists play six pieces of salvaged wood, wired with over 5,000 LEDs and ringed by more than 200 paper lanterns. Free, all ages, about an hour long.

River Park runs along the North Branch at 5100 N Francisco, a leafy stretch on the Albany Park and Lincoln Square edge. Come right at dusk so the LEDs and lanterns read against the dark water. Today's 97°F peak eases into the mid-80s by showtime under clear skies — bring a blanket, a low chair, and water.

Sangria Fest on the Beach @ Shore Club

If you're going to be outside on a 97°F Thursday, do it with a drink in your hand near the water. Sangria Fest on the Beach sets up at Shore Club on North Avenue Beach from 6PM: your ticket ($25–$42) covers three hours of sangria tastings, plus giveaways. Shore Club is the sit-down spot right on the sand, so you get lake breeze and skyline views.

The catch on a scorcher: alcohol plus 90°F-plus air dehydrates you fast. Alternate every sangria with water, wear sunscreen even at 6PM, and skip the umbrella — rain chance is only 21%. Rideshare or the lakefront path beats hunting for parking near North Avenue Beach.

Digital Footprint @ iO Theater

Digital Footprint is a comedy show with a sharp premise: comedians do full sets about their online pasts — the cringe, the deleted posts, the phases we'd all rather forget. Produced by Hannah Belmont and Prim Stonebraker, tonight's lineup stacks Kieron Harrell, AJ Leidig, Sam Rossi and the producers. It's $20, starts at 7:30PM, runs about an hour.

It's at iO Theater, 1501 N Kingsbury — the storied Chicago improv institution in its Goose Island-adjacent home, 4.8 on Google, with a bar to hang at after. Intimate rooms and, importantly tonight, indoors and air-conditioned: a cheap, low-commitment place to sit somewhere cool and laugh.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

Taste of Polonia @ Copernicus Center

Labor Day weekend in Chicago means Taste of Polonia, billed as the largest Polish festival in the country, taking over the Copernicus Center in Jefferson Park Friday through Monday. Friday's gates open at 4:30PM. Load up on potato pancakes, kielbasa, pierogi and blintzes, with polka bands, tribute acts and a beer garden running late. Admission starts around $10.

The Copernicus Center at 5216 W Lawrence is a genuine neighborhood anchor, and it's one of the easiest big fests to reach car-free: take the Blue Line straight to Jefferson Park, a short walk from the gates. Friday runs 90°F and overcast with a 34% rain chance — muggy but manageable. Go hungry and bring cash for the vendor lines.

Movies in the Parks: La Vie en Rose @ Lake Shore Park

For a free Friday night that isn't a kids' movie, Movies in the Parks screens La Vie en Rose at Lake Shore Park — the 2007 Édith Piaf biopic that won Marion Cotillard her Oscar. In French with English subtitles, PG-13, starting around 8:15PM at dusk. Free, no ticket needed.

Lake Shore Park is a tucked-away green space right by the water near Streeterville and the Gold Coast — one of the prettier settings in the program. Friday is 90°F and overcast with a 34% chance of rain, so keep an eye on it: outdoor screenings can be called for weather. Check the Park District page first, and bring a blanket and bug spray.

ON THE HORIZON

African Festival of the Arts @ Washington Park

The marquee to plan around: the African Festival of the Arts returns to Washington Park for its 36th edition over Labor Day weekend, Saturday through Monday. It's one of the largest celebrations of the African diaspora in the country — music and dance across multiple stages, a sprawling artists' market, cultural exhibits, hands-on workshops, and food and drink from across the continent and diaspora.

It sets up in Washington Park's Sunken Gardens at 5531 S Martin Luther King Dr, on the South Side near Hyde Park — go for a full afternoon of grazing and wandering. Saturday cools to 79°F with scattered showers (about 35%), more comfortable than the front half of the week; pack a light layer. The full three-day schedule is on the festival listing, and crowds peak Saturday and Sunday, so arrive early.
