Chicago is under a low gray ceiling today — 79 degrees, light rain, and better-than-even odds of showers, with drizzle carrying into a warmer Sunday. It's a weekend that rewards a plan: a loud indoor room when the sky opens, a lakefront spectacle when it lifts, and a couple of low-stakes outdoor options you can bail on without losing much. Here's where we'd point you.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 15

AZ: Doe or Die 30 Year Anniversary @ Concord Music Hall

AZ is playing his 1995 debut Doe or Die front to back for its 30th anniversary — a cornerstone of mid-90s New York rap, the album that introduced a lot of listeners to a certain quicksilver flow. Hearing it in full, in sequence, is a rap-nerd occasion, and Concord Music Hall in Logan Square is the right size for it: a mid-size room where the sightlines stay honest even when it fills in.

It's 21+ and $50, doors into an 8:00PM start, and — crucially tonight — indoors. Concord sits on Milwaukee Ave in the thick of Logan Square, so take the Blue Line to California and walk. If you want to eat first, Longman & Eagle and Parsons Chicken & Fish are both close and both hold up. Get there for the openers if you can; the room fills fast for a headliner playing a classic.

Cubs vs. Cardinals @ Wrigley Field

The oldest rivalry in the National League gets a 1:20PM day game at Wrigley. Cubs-Cardinals reliably pulls a bigger, louder crowd than a midweek game, with a decent contingent of Cardinals red filtering up from downstate. The catch is the weather: 79 degrees, light rain, and a 53% shot at showers, so a delay is genuinely possible. Bring a poncho rather than an umbrella — Wrigley will make you check the umbrella at the gate.

Red Line to Addison drops you right at the ballpark. Murphy's Bleachers, across from the marquee on Sheffield, is the neighborhood standby for a pre-game beer or a rain-delay holding pattern. Even in gray weather, an afternoon in the bleachers with a rivalry on the field beats staring at the forecast.

Bon Festival @ North Park Village Nature Center

For something quieter and stranger, the free Bon Festival runs 7:30 to 9:30PM at the North Park Village Nature Center. Obon is the Japanese summer tradition of honoring ancestors, and this one leans into the sound of it: taiko drumming, shinobue bamboo flute, and classical Japanese dance from Asian Improv aRts Midwest. Taiko carries in open air, and hearing it after dark in a nature preserve on the far Northwest Side is a real change of pace from a bar or a ballpark.

It's all ages and free. Weather-wise, light rain is floating around tonight, so pack a poncho and something to sit on for the grass. Fair warning on logistics: the nature center at 5801 N. Pulaski is not near an L stop, so plan on a bus or a car and give yourself extra time. If the drums are going and the rain holds off, it's the most peaceful ninety minutes on this list.

Eckhart Park Farmers Market @ Eckhart Park

If you want a gentle start to a gray day, West Town's new Saturday market runs 9:00AM to 1:00PM at Eckhart Park. It's a first-season market — produce vendors, prepared-food stands, and local makers — running weekly through September 19, so it's still finding its regulars. That's part of the charm: smaller crowd, more room to actually talk to the person who grew the tomatoes.

Markets run rain or shine, and today's light rain will only thin the crowd. The park is at 1330 W. Chicago Ave — Blue Line to Chicago, then a few blocks west. Skip the plan to find a brunch table afterward and just graze the food stalls on site; that's the point of a market morning.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 16

Chicago Air and Water Show (Final Day) @ North Avenue Beach

Sunday is the last day of the Air and Water Show, the biggest free show of its kind in the country. Jets, stunt teams, and boats work the lakefront from 10:30AM to 3:00PM, and you can watch from anywhere between Fullerton and Oak Street — North Avenue Beach is the focal point and the loudest, most crowded vantage. We pointed to it earlier this weekend; if Saturday's rain kept you home, this is the closing window.

Sunday's forecast is 83 and muggy with drizzle and a 43% chance of rain, so low cloud could clip the higher-altitude passes — get down early, stake out a patch of sand, and be ready to wait out a gray stretch. There's no L stop at the beach; the 72 North Avenue bus or a rideshare gets you closest, and traffic on Lake Shore Drive will be heavy near showtime. Pack water and snacks so you don't lose your spot hunting for a concession line.

ON THE HORIZON

Chicago House Music Festival and Conference @ Millennium Park

Looking ahead: Aug 27 through 30, the Chicago House Music Festival and Conference brings days of DJ sets to Millennium Park, free. This is worth planning a weeknight around — house music was born in this city in the '80s, and the festival is the genre played where it belongs, on a big free stage downtown. If you only make one late-August night count, this is a strong candidate.

It's in the Loop, so any train downtown works — Washington/Wabash is roughly a block from the Great Lawn. Grab food beforehand at Cindy's Rooftop or The Berghoff.
