Tonight leans to the lakefront, with a big outdoor show on Northerly Island, a free art exhibition near the West Loop, circus in a West Side park, and a Sox game with a rapper waiting at the end of it. Here's where to point yourself.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 7

Young the Giant: Victory Garden Tour with Cold War Kids @ Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island

Young the Giant roll into the lakefront tonight on their Victory Garden Tour, with Cold War Kids co-headlining and Cleveland's Kennyhoopla opening — three bands built on big, singable choruses like 'Cough Syrup' and 'Hang Me Up to Dry.' Music starts at 6:30PM. Huntington Bank Pavilion sits out on Northerly Island, a finger of parkland behind the Museum Campus where the skyline is your backdrop and the lake breeze does the cooling.

It's a lawn-and-seats shed, so pack a light layer — the wind off the water picks up after sunset. Tonight is 85 and overcast with just a 5% chance of rain, so plan on a dry night. Nathaniel Mary Quinn: A Love Letter to My Mother @ National Public Housing Museum (free)

Chicago's new National Public Housing Museum is showing Nathaniel Mary Quinn's first solo museum exhibition in the city, and it's free to get in. Quinn grew up in Chicago public housing — which he calls 'my first studio' — and his fractured, collage-style portraits pull straight from that childhood. The centerpiece is a Robert Taylor Homes living room rebuilt from memory to conjure his family's apartment circa 1984, hung alongside works on canvas and paper.

It's a small, focused museum — plan 60 to 90 minutes. You'll find it at 919 S. Ada near the UIC campus, and the Taylor Street corridor a few blocks south is lined with old-school Italian spots if you want to eat after. Open until 5PM today, and since it's all indoors, the flat grey skies don't matter one bit.

Circus in the Park at Augusta @ Augusta (Carpenter) Park (free)

CircEsteem — the Chicago youth circus nonprofit that teaches juggling, acrobatics and clowning to kids across the city — brings a free hour of circus arts to Augusta (Carpenter) Park tonight as part of the Park District's Night Out in the Parks series. It's all ages and runs 6 to 7PM.

Bring a blanket or a folding chair and claim a patch of grass. It's free and outdoor, and at 85 and overcast with a 5% chance of rain, the weather's on your side — no umbrella needed. The park is at 4433 W. Augusta Blvd on the West Side; grab something from the taquerias along Chicago Avenue before or after, and street parking is usually easy.

White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians + Ja Rule Postgame Concert @ Rate Field

The White Sox host the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field tonight at 6:40, and there's a bonus at the end: a postgame concert from Ja Rule, free to anyone with a ticket to the game. The ballpark (Google 4.6) has great lower-deck sightlines and a concourse food lineup that's leveled up in recent years. It's a rebuilding Sox season, so tickets are cheap and walk-up is easy — you can still land a good seat day-of.

The park is in Bridgeport on the South Side. Lots surround the stadium but they empty slowly around a concert crowd, and Rate Field has its own dedicated CTA stop right outside the gate, so transit is the smart play. Weather's a non-issue tonight: 85, overcast, 5% rain. The music kicks off after the final out.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 8

Budweiser Concert Series: Ashley McBryde @ Gallagher Way

Tomorrow the Budweiser Concert Series brings Grammy-winning country songwriter Ashley McBryde — the voice behind 'One Night Standards' — to Gallagher Way, the open plaza just outside Wrigley Field. GA is $31, VIP $61. It's a grassy, standing-and-lawn-chair setup in the shadow of the ballpark: easygoing early, livelier after dark.

Saturday's forecast is 79 and overcast with a 10% chance of rain, so it should hold dry — bring a layer for after sunset. Wrigleyville is ringed with bars and restaurants if you want to make a night of it, but the parking is brutal on any event night, so take transit. Grab tickets through the link.

RiverLab: River Exploration Paddle @ River Park ($5)

For something genuinely different on Saturday, the Park District's RiverLab program puts you in a boat on the Chicago River at River Park for a two-hour guided exploration paddle. It's beginner-friendly, all ages, and just $5 — you'll learn about the river's ecosystem and the critters that live in it while you're actually out on the water, from 1 to 3PM.

River Park sits where the North Branch meets the North Shore Channel on the Northwest Side. Wear shoes that can get wet and bring sun protection even under clouds — Saturday's 79 and overcast with a slim 10% rain chance, but check for any weather cancellation before you head out. Registration is required. Afterward, the Albany Park neighborhood has a deep bench of Middle Eastern and Korean spots along Kedzie and Lawrence.

ON THE HORIZON

Chicago Air & Water Show @ North Avenue Beach (free)

Looking further ahead: the Chicago Air & Water Show returns to the lakefront August 14 to 16 — the largest free show of its kind in the country, pulling around two million people to the shoreline for military jet teams, aerobatic pilots and watercraft demos roaring low over Lake Michigan. It's completely free and a true Chicago summer institution.

The action centers on North Avenue Beach, but you can watch from anywhere along the lake — Oak Street Beach, the Lakefront Trail, or a North Side rooftop. Crowds are enormous and the prime sand goes early, so stake out a spot in the morning. Practice runs usually happen Friday the 14th, with the full show over the weekend. No ticket needed — bring sunscreen and water, and bike the Lakefront Trail or take transit, because driving near the lake on show days is a mess.
