Lollapalooza has Grant Park by the throat this weekend — 400,000 people and a wall of sound — but the sky has other plans. It's light rain today (79F, about a 60% chance), heavy rain Saturday, and a softer drizzle by Sunday, which means the smart move is knowing exactly where to duck inside. Here's a weekend built for it: a hometown aftershow, a free soul tribute, a room full of old arcade machines, and a globe-famous soccer club to close things out.

FRIDAY, JULY 31

Clipse w/ Mick Jenkins @ The Riviera Theatre

Clipse — Pusha T and his brother Malice — bring their Lollapalooza aftershow to the Riviera, and they're handing the opening slot to Chicago's own Mick Jenkins, which turns a tour stop into a hometown moment. Doors are at 9:30pm and it's 18+; this is coke-rap royalty in a 1917 movie palace, so expect a packed, hands-in-the-air room, not a polite seated show.

The Riviera is in Uptown, a few blocks west of the Lawrence Red Line stop. Line your stomach first at Furama on Broadway for late dim sum. It's indoors, so tonight's on-and-off light rain won't touch you once you're in the door.

Marvin Gaye Tribute @ Columbus Park Refectory

The Chicago West Community Music Center turns the historic Columbus Park Refectory into a full-band, orchestral tribute to Marvin Gaye — the Prince of Soul — blending live performance, storytelling, and archival visuals into one immersive night. It runs 7:00 to 8:15pm, it's all ages, and it costs nothing.

This one's on the far West Side, inside Columbus Park just off the Eisenhower, so it's easiest to reach by car — and there isn't much dining right at the park, so grab something on the way in. The payoff for a soggy Friday: it's entirely indoors, and a free orchestral run through 'What's Going On' is a better call than fighting the Lolla crowds downtown.

Retro Video Game Expo @ Clearing Branch Library

Flashback Friday, literally: the Clearing branch library is rolling out playable machines from the 1970s through the 2000s — Atari up to the Nintendo Switch — plus a virtual pinball table, and it's free and open to all ages. It's the rare rainy-day plan that costs nothing and doesn't care that it's pouring outside.

Clearing is on the Southwest Side near Midway; take the Orange Line to Midway and grab a bus, or just drive and park on the street. Bring the kids or bring your own nostalgia — either works. It runs during the day, so make it your indoor daytime move before the evening shows kick off.

BOGO Fridays @ Smack Dab

Smack Dab in Edgewater runs a rotating buy-one-get-one every Friday — some weeks it's sandwiches, some weeks it's pastries or drinks — and the only way to know the week's deal is to be on their email list. Show up between 8am and 2pm and let the counter surprise you.
