This Week Downtown: Free Nights in Millennium Park
Your week-ahead guide to Downtown — 5 picks worth planning around
By Raj Singh · Published July 12, 2026.
The Loop and River North run the summer-in-the-city playbook this week: a lakefront food festival, back-to-back free nights of film and music under the Pritzker Pavilion trellis, a Tony-winning musical in the theater district, and a River North street fest to close things out. Sunday opens clear and 81, so start in Grant Park — then let the free evening programming carry you through a hot midweek.
SUNDAY 7/12
Taste of Chicago @ Grant Park
The city's flagship food festival takes over Grant Park with the best of Chicago's restaurant scene, live music, and the skyline as backdrop. Free to enter, pay by the bite; gates from 11am. Cap the day with a stein and creamed spinach at The Berghoff, the 1898 Loop institution two blocks west on Adams.
TUESDAY 7/14
Millennium Park Film Series @ Jay Pritzker Pavilion
A free double feature under the stars — this week a tribute to Rob Reiner. Bring a blanket; lawn seating fills early. 6:30–9pm, free. Beforehand, grab a cocktail at Cindy's rooftop in the Chicago Athletic Association, looking straight out over the park.
WEDNESDAY 7/15
Ravel Piano Concerto @ Jay Pritzker Pavilion
The Grant Park Music Festival — one of the country's last free outdoor classical series — brings Ravel to the Pritzker Pavilion at 6:30pm. The front seats are ticketed, but the Great Lawn is open — pack a picnic and claim a spot early.
THURSDAY 7/16
Suffs @ CIBC Theatre
The Tony-winning suffragist musical lands in the Loop for its Broadway in Chicago run, evening curtain at CIBC on Monroe. Do it right with chicken Vesuvio at Italian Village, the 1927 pre-theater standby a block away on Monroe.
FRIDAY 7/17
Taste of River North @ Ward Park
River North's neighborhood food-and-music fest sets up at Ward Park (Kingsbury and Erie) Friday from 5pm and back Saturday at 11am; $10 suggested donation. Warm up with duck-fat fries and a martini at Bavette's, the clubby River North steakhouse a few blocks south on Kinzie.
That's the shortlist — find more Downtown events on the neighborhood page.
