Lincoln Park Conservatory
A free, always-green glass house steps from the zoo — the perfect warm second stop on a cold day.
Why you'll go
Free, warm, and right next to the zoo, so you can stack them. Palms, ferns, orchids, and a koi pond to point at — a bite-size winter win.
What they'll love
The Fern Room is the toddler magnet: a warm, green prehistoric jungle with trickling waterfalls, ponds with koi and turtles to point at, and cycads that go back 250 million years. Tiny dinosaur figurines are tucked into the foliage for little ones to hunt for. Big, touchable palm leaves in the soaring Palm House and a wall of color in the Orchid House round out an easy loop.
Real talk
Free (a free timed-entry ticket is recommended). Heads-up: the Fern Room has steps at entry/exit — you'll lift or park the stroller there. Pairs perfectly with a cold-weather zoo lap.
Don't miss
- Hunt for the hidden dinosaurs in the Fern Room Visitors have long reported miniature dinosaur figurines tucked into the greenery of the Fern Room, alongside cycads and ferns that date back 250 million years. It turns a plant room into a low-key toddler scavenger hunt. Heads up: the Fern Room has stairs on both ends. If you're pushing a stroller, park it and carry your little one through, or ask a staff member for the alternative path.
- Find the koi and turtles The Fern Room has ponds with koi fish and turtles. Slow, low-to-the-ground pond-watching is exactly the pace a 1-2 year old enjoys. Hold hands or babywear near the water — paths here can be narrow and slippery from the humidity.
- Touch the giant palm leaves in the Palm House The Palm House is the tallest room (about fifty feet at its peak) with oversized fronds and a paved loop, so wobbly walkers can toddle a full circle and reach out to feel the big leaves. This is the most stroller-friendly room. Budget about 45-60 minutes for the whole greenhouse.
- Catch the seasonal flower show in the Show House The Show House rotates big seasonal flower displays through the year — a sensory hit of color for little ones. It's warm and humid year-round inside, so peel off the winter coat at the door rather than overheating mid-loop.
