Lincoln Park Zoo
Free, open 365, no ticket — the rare big Chicago day you can do on a whim and walk away the second they're done.
Why you'll go
Genuinely free for everyone, every day, 365 — no admission at all. It's the rare big day you can do on a whim and abandon the moment they're done. And it grows with them: a few months ago it wouldn't have landed.
What they'll love
The monkeys swinging through the trees, then Farm-in-the-Zoo — the same goats and chickens they already know from a Tonies box at home. Watching them connect the goat in their hand to the goat in front of them is the visit.
Real talk
Indoor houses don't open until 10. Parking is the catch — first 30 min free, then $35–45/day, cashless — so take the Red Line to Fullerton and walk, or the #151 bus. Go at the 8am gate: the Farm's live, crowds are thin, and you're done before nap. Café food is forgettable; pack snacks.
Don't miss
- Start at the Searle Visitor Center Just inside the East Gate: stroller + wagon rentals, quiet/nursing rooms, and free sensory bags. Rent a wagon here before you do anything else.
- Farm-in-the-Zoo Groom goats, feed cows + chickens, and the Main Barn's play stations (a kid-sized coop with real chicks). Get there by 1pm for the goat-grooming + chicken-feeding demo.
- Pritzker Family Children's Zoo Eye-level otters and beavers through low windows, a climbing area and a slide. The seated viewing windows are a lifesaver when they need to slow down.
- Lionel Train + Endangered Species Carousel A trackless train on a scenic loop. $4.50 each; best for 2–6. Every ride helps keep admission free. Ride the train first; grab a wooden whistle at the booth.
- Kovler Seal Pool Live seal-training sessions and underwater viewing windows. The underwater glass holds a 1-year-old longer than anything else.
