What to expect
America's largest free airshow, an iconic Chicago event since 1959. Over a million spectators line the lakefront from Fullerton to Oak Street. North Avenue Beach is show center — performers orient routines toward this focal point. Saturday and Sunday August 15–16 with a public rehearsal Friday August 14. DCASE announces the official 2026 lineup in mid-July; the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are on the Air Force's published schedule for the weekend and are expected to headline alongside the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team, with military demos, vintage aircraft, and water-rescue displays. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are expected to sit 2026 out — they're booked at the Oregon International Air Show the same weekend. Daily show typically runs roughly mid-morning into mid-afternoon — confirm exact times closer to the date.
Tickets
Free. No tickets or reservations are required for public lakefront viewing. Paid rooftop, restaurant, hotel-room, and boat packages are private viewing options and can sell out early.
Transit
Public transit STRONGLY recommended — driving is a nightmare. CTA Bus 72 (North) serves North Avenue Beach. Red Line → Clark/Division or Sedgwick, walk east. Divvy works great. Driving = arrive before 8am or you won't park within walking distance.
Bag policy
Open public beach. Bring blankets, chairs, picnic. NO grills. No glass containers on the beach.
Family-friendly
EXCELLENT for kids. Loud (bring ear protection for the baby — this is non-negotiable). Hot — bring sunscreen, shade structure (umbrella or pop-up), tons of water. Plenty of food trucks but lines are long — pack snacks. Stroller-friendly along the lakefront path but NOT on the sand. Diaper changes: limited bathroom facilities — bring portable changing pad. Dog-friendly with designated areas.
History
The Chicago Air and Water Show launched in 1959 as the Lake Shore Park Air & Water Show — a modest Park District "Family Day" put together by supervisor Al Benedict on a budget of just $88, featuring a Coast Guard rescue demo, water skiers, and diving. It relocated from its original Navy Pier–adjacent site to North Avenue Beach in the 1980s, where the sand and open shoreline could absorb the growing crowds. Today it draws more than two million spectators across the weekend, making it the largest free-admission air and water exhibition in the United States. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds have alternated as headliners for decades; the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team is a perennial crowd favorite.
Local tips
- Friday rehearsal is still the best local strategy, especially with kids or anyone who does not enjoy the North Avenue Beach crush.
- North Avenue Beach is show center, but Fullerton and Oak Street give you good views with less of the packed-sand feeling.
- Bring ear protection for children and sound-sensitive adults. The lakefront echo can be intense even away from show center.
- CTA is the default. Choose Chicago notes there is no public parking at North Avenue Beach during show weekend.
- Do not promise yourself the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds until the official lineup drops. The show is worth it either way, but accuracy matters.
Frequently asked questions
