- Neighborhood: Back of the Yards

Schedule
- June 19-21, 2026 — Fiesta Back of the Yards: BYNC lists the event as all day; Time Out lists noon-10 p.m. Expect the carnival, food, vendors, and stage programming along Ashland Ave between 45th and 47th.
What to expect
Fiesta Back of the Yards is the neighborhood's three-day community celebration on Ashland Avenue between 45th and 47th, June 19-21, 2026. BYNC positions this year's Fiesta as the 35th anniversary of the current event, with roots in the organization's 1940 Free Fair. Expect one live entertainment stage, carnival rides, midway games, Latin food vendors, local merchants, artisans, and a deeply neighborhood crowd rather than a downtown street-fest churn.
Tickets
Free admission. Carnival rides and games are paid separately; BYNC is promoting a 2026 Mega Pass as a $75 ride-all-weekend option.
Transit
Orange Line to Western then the 49 Western or 9 Ashland bus south. Or Red Line to 47th and the 47 Cross-town bus west. Driving works best of any near-south fest — Back of the Yards has more parking than the lakefront neighborhoods. Side streets off Ashland are usually fine.
Bag policy
No formal bag check; visual at gates. CPD presence and BYNC volunteer security typical. ID at beer tents.
Family-friendly
Genuinely family-centric — multi-generational audience by design, kids ride the carnival from open to close, and food is approachable. The Mega Pass is the parent's best deal. Stroller-easy on Ashland but the carnival area gets tight. Restrooms via porta-johns; the BYNC building on Ashland may open public restrooms for the fest.
History
BYNC launched the Free Fair in 1940 as a month-long neighborhood fundraiser. After the original 47th-and-Damen site became a shopping center, BYNC created Fiesta on 47th Street in response to community demand. In 2026, Fiesta celebrates its 35th anniversary and supports BYNC programs including senior shuttle service, employment readiness, youth employment, and Ballet Folklorico.
Local tips
- Mega Pass at $75 pays back in 4 rides — buy at the gate before going in.
- Family kitchens (look for the abuela-staffed booths near the south end) make better tacos al pastor and elotes than the carnival vendors.
- Saturday's banda and norteño bookings draw the biggest crowds — Sunday afternoon is the family slot, Friday evening the early-bird slot.
- Bring cash for the food booths — many run cash-only.
- This is a community-organizing nonprofit's fundraiser, so the energy is local and welcoming. Spanish helps at some food booths but isn't required.
- Lucha libre, when it's on the schedule, draws a packed crowd — get there an hour early.
- If you've never visited Back of the Yards, the BYNC office at 1751 W. 47th is worth a stop for context on the neighborhood's organizing history.
