What to expect

The biggest LGBTQ+ street festival in the Midwest. Half-mile of Halsted Street. 4 music stages (Addison, Belmont, Cornelia, Roscoe) with all-day live music, 250+ vendors, dance exhibitions, drag performances. Friday from 5pm, Saturday + Sunday 11am–10pm. New for recent years: Friday kickoff added (was historically 2 days). Often called Chicago's 'unofficial second Pride.' If you only do two LGBTQ+ events: Pride Fest in June + Market Days in August.

Tickets

Free to enter; a $20 suggested donation is requested at the gate. Donations support performers, festival workers, charities, nonprofits, community programs, and the Chicago Pride Crosswalks. Optional VIP Gold/Platinum weekend experiences are paid upgrades with express entry, lounge access, private restrooms, bar service, and covered seating; 21+ ID is required to redeem alcoholic beverage perks.

Transit

CTA Red Line → Addison (Wrigley Field) or Belmont (Red/Brown/Purple). Multiple bus lines. Closest hotel is Villa Toscana at 3447 N Halsted. 7 entry gates on Halsted (Belmont, Addison, Cornelia, Roscoe, Aldine) — non-main gates clear faster.

Bag policy

All bags inspected. No large bags/backpacks. No coolers, weapons, pepper spray, firearms. Clear sealed water bottles allowed.

Family-friendly

Daytime is family-friendly with stroller. Saturday + Sunday 11am–4pm is the family window. After 6pm gets bar-crowd dense and adult-focused — not ideal with infant. Drag performances daytime are kid-appropriate.

History

Northalsted Market Days traces its roots to August 1982, when a handful of merchants along Halsted Street set up folding tables for a modest community street fair in Chicago's Boystown neighborhood — the oldest officially recognized gay neighborhood in the United States. Over four decades the festival grew into the largest street festival in the Midwest, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors along a half-mile stretch of Halsted from Belmont to Addison, and it remains the heart of Chicago's LGBTQ+ summer calendar — open to all, with proceeds supporting community programs including the Chicago Pride Crosswalks.

Local tips

  1. Use Belmont CTA as the cleanest transit plan, then enter from a side gate like Roscoe or Aldine if the main Belmont/Addison gates are jammed.
  2. The official page warns about pickpockets. Keep your phone and wallet in a front zip pocket or crossbody, not a rear pocket.
  3. Friday night is now part of the festival, but Saturday afternoon is still the best balance of energy and navigability before the nighttime crush.
  4. VIP is mostly about comfort: express entry, bathrooms, shade, and bar access. Buy it for logistics, not because general entry requires it.
  5. Leashed dogs are allowed, but the official page recommends leaving before 5 p.m.; August pavement plus shoulder-to-shoulder crowds can be rough.
