What to expect

The 46th annual Taste of Chicago returns to Grant Park July 8-12, 2026 and is back in its peak-summer July slot after the recent September/NASCAR years. The 2026 Taste is also bigger: five days, 84 food vendors, 20 food trucks, an expanded Snack Shack, beer hall, cocktail lounge, free nightly concerts, Chicago SummerDance, family activities, and Eli's Cheesecake's 1,000-pound cake tradition. The most useful planning truth: there are no old-school food tickets. You enter free, then buy directly from vendors.

Tickets

FREE admission, no tickets needed. Food and drinks are pay-as-you-go at each vendor (the old Taste ticket-strip system was retired — vendors set their own prices and accept card/cash). Free concerts also free.

Transit

BEST option. CTA Red, Blue, Brown, Orange, Green, Pink lines all hit the Loop — Roosevelt or Monroe are closest. Buses 3, 4, 6, J14, 20, 56, 60, 124, 146, 147, 151. Driving: Millennium Garages — entrance on Columbus. Discount parking via SpotHero or ParkWhiz. Bike: parking on perimeter of Grant + Millennium Parks (Divvy stations everywhere).

Bag policy

ADA accessible. Strollers allowed. No bicycles or wheeled transportation inside. Bring sun protection — limited shade.

Family-friendly

Excellent for the family. Kid-friendly area with games and activities, hundreds of picnic tables, stroller-friendly throughout. Public bathrooms with changing facilities. Lots of grass at Butler Field for blanket setup. Free lawn seating for concerts.

History

Taste of Chicago debuted on July 4, 1980, when entrepreneur Arnie Morton persuaded Mayor Jane Byrne to block off three city blocks of North Michigan Avenue; though organizers expected 100,000 visitors, more than 250,000 showed up. The festival moved to Grant Park the following year, grew into a ten-day event, and earned the title of world's largest food festival. Now produced by the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) as a free, five-day celebration, the 2026 edition marks the festival's 46th year and its return to a July slot after a two-year detour to September to accommodate the NASCAR Chicago Street Race.

Local tips

  1. Get there at opening — vendors are fresh, lines short, and the heat is manageable
  2. Saturday tends to be the most crowded day; Sunday afternoon is calmest
  3. Bring an empty water bottle and use the free refill stations rather than buying drinks
  4. Park at Millennium Park Garage if driving — you can come and go
  5. Eli's Cheesecake birthday cake giveaway is mid-festival — check their socials for exact day/time
