What to expect

Annual celebration of Greek food and culture on Halsted between Adams and Van Buren in Greektown, August 28–30, 2026 (the 36th edition). Greek restaurant booths from the corridor's anchors (Greek Islands and Athena are the longtime survivors after Pegasus closed in 2017, Santorini in 2020, and both buildings were demolished in 2022) serving gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita, saganaki (with the flaming opa! routine), loukoumades, and Greek wine and ouzo. Live bouzouki music and Greek folk-dance demonstrations. The Greektown community treats this as their flagship community event.

Tickets

Free admission. The 2026 Special Events Management page does not list a required ticket. Greektown Chamber's most recent festival language says admission is free with a suggested donation benefiting the Greektown Chamber of Commerce; food and drink are purchased a la carte.

Transit

Blue Line to UIC-Halsted is one block south. CTA buses 8 Halsted, 20 Madison, and 126 Jackson all serve. Driving works — Greektown has commercial garages on Halsted ($15–$25); street parking on Monroe and Adams is fest-friendly.

Bag policy

No formal bag check; ID at wine and ouzo tents.

Family-friendly

Great for families during daytime — Greek restaurant culture is multi-generational and the kids' programming (folk dance demos for kids) is genuine. Stroller-easy on Halsted's wide footprint. Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon are the family slots; Friday evening leans 21+ as the music crowd builds. Restaurants on Halsted are stroller-friendly indoors with bathrooms.

Local tips

  1. If you only snack at booths, you miss half the point. Pair the fest with a sit-down stop at a Greektown restaurant for the full neighborhood read.
  2. Saganaki is the tourist-famous order, but look for grilled seafood, souvlaki, loukoumades, Greek wines, and newer contemporary Greek menus too.
  3. The National Hellenic Museum is the smart cultural add-on before dinner or between food rounds.
  4. UIC-Halsted Blue Line is the easy CTA play. Driving is possible, but Halsted garages fill and rideshare can snarl around Adams/Van Buren.
  5. Do not describe admission as a ticket. Current official 2026 page is free-admission language; suggested donation, if collected, benefits the Chamber.
