Crisp Skies, Block Parties and a Movie in the Park
Your daily guide to what's popping in Chicago
By Raj Singh · Published October 3, 2026.
The first real clear-sky Saturday of October lands at 62 degrees with almost no chance of rain - a crisp, bright fall day that practically demands you get outside before the light goes. There's a free all-day block party on the North Side, a loud bill at the Salt Shed, a movie under the dusk sky in Rogers Park and a comedy grudge match in Old Town. Here's where we'd point you today, tomorrow and toward next weekend.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3
Block Club Chicago Block Party @ Half Acre Beer Co
Block Club Chicago - the nonprofit newsroom that covers this city neighborhood by neighborhood - throws its end-of-summer bash in the lot at Half Acre's Balmoral Avenue brewery, and it runs a generous noon to 9 p.m. Expect live music, food, beer and a roster of local vendors, with a Kids Zone and bouncy house if you're bringing the whole crew.
The day's extras lean into the Block Club personality: a live recording of the Block Club podcast and a performance from the Jesse White Tumblers are both on the bill. Admission is free with an RSVP; the organizers also sell optional VIP tickets if you want the upgrade.
It's an outdoor party and the forecast is on your side - clear skies and a high around 62. Free with RSVP, noon to 9 p.m. at 2050 W. Balmoral Ave.
Ministry and Acid Bath with Windhand @ The Salt Shed
If your Saturday night runs louder, Ministry headlines the Salt Shed on Elston tonight, with Acid Bath and Windhand filling out the bill. The listing has the night starting at 6:30 p.m. - check the link for tickets and the full set times.
Campfire Horrors at Loyola @ Loyola Park
The Park District closes the night outdoors with a free, closed-captioned screening of The Addams Family (the 2019 animated one, PG, 86 minutes) at Loyola Park, part of the Night Out in the Parks series. The movie starts at dusk - the official window is 7:00 to 8:26 p.m.
Clear skies and a high near 62 make for a good night for an outdoor screening. It's free and open to all ages.
Standup Throw Down: Millennials vs Gen X @ Second City
Over at Second City's Judy's Beat Lounge, host Todd Glover referees a live stand-up battle between Millennials and Gen X, with comics trading sharp takes on technology, family, dating and pop culture. At the end of the night the crowd votes on which generation is funnier.
It's a Saturday-night regular at 7 p.m. in Old Town, tickets $25.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4
St. Francis 800th Jubilee Concert @ Saint Ita Church
Sunday afternoon in Edgewater, Mary, Mother of God Parish marks the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi's death with a free concert of original works for chamber orchestra and choir, curated by parish music director Dan Lagacy. It's at Saint Ita (5500 N. Broadway) at 3:30 p.m., and all are welcome.
Admission is free; a free-will offering will be taken up to support the Mary, Mother of God Food Pantry & Soup Kitchen.
Harvest Fest at Indian Boundary @ Indian Boundary Park
Sunday brings a seasonal afternoon at Indian Boundary Park: a Harvest Fest with pumpkins and a 'Zoo to You' mobile petting zoo visiting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. - goats, sheep, a little cow and a bunny among them - plus the usual fall-fest activities. It's part of the Park District's Night Out in the Parks Halloween programming.
A $10 wristband covers the activities (the pumpkin patch is priced separately), and it's open to all ages. Runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2500 W. Lunt Ave.
THIS WEEK
Bank of America Chicago Marathon @ Grant Park
Looking ahead to Sunday, October 11: more than 45,000 runners take over the streets for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, a 26.2-mile tour of the city on foot. Entry closed long ago, but watching is free and arguably the better gig - the course threads through neighborhoods, and the listing points spectators to Pilsen, Chinatown, Boystown and Lincoln Park.
The Grant Park start and finish aren't open to the public, but the reunite area there opens at 9:30 a.m. Expect major street closures downtown and along the route, so plan on the train rather than driving.
