This Week Downtown: Free Music, Film & Rachmaninov in the Park
Your week-ahead guide to Downtown — 4 picks worth planning around

The Loop's free-summer machine is in full swing this week, even as the forecast turns sticky — expect mid-90s and afternoon thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday, so glance at the radar before you head for the lakefront lawns. Three nights of free programming at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion anchor the week, with Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman holding court at the Goodman if the sky opens up.
MONDAY 6/29
Millennium Park Summer Music Series @ Jay Pritzker Pavilion
The Mondays-and-Thursdays concert series rolls on with Sir Chloe, Venus & the Flytraps, and DJ Jill Hopkins on the bill. Free, no ticket, 6:30pm — stake out a spot on the Great Lawn early, since storms could push the crowd under the Gehry trellis. Pre-show, the tortelloni at Italian Village on Monroe is a 100-year-old Loop classic worth the detour.
TUESDAY 6/30
Millennium Park Summer Film Series: Independence Day @ Jay Pritzker Pavilion
The 1996 alien-invasion blockbuster hits the 40-foot LED screen for its 30th anniversary — fittingly patriotic timing for the week. Free, 6:30pm, bring a blanket for the lawn. Grab a deep-dish slice to go from Lou Malnati's on Wells and make it a picnic.
WEDNESDAY 7/1
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 @ Jay Pritzker Pavilion
The Grant Park Music Festival brings Conductor Laureate Carlos Kalmar and the brilliant pianist Olga Kern for Rachmaninov's famously virtuosic Third, plus Stravinsky's Game of Cards and Elgar's sunny In the South. Free and reserved seating, 6:30pm. The Cuban sandwich at Cafecito on Congress is a quick, cheap pre-concert fuel-up.
THURSDAY 7/2
Iceboy! The Musical @ Goodman Theatre
Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman star in this world-premiere musical ‘40,000 years in the making,’ with music by Urinetown's Mark Hollmann — extended through August 9. A safe, air-conditioned bet on a stormy week. The duck-fat fries at Petterino's next door are the classic theater-district warm-up.
