This Week in South Loop & Chinatown: Free Museum Days

Your week-ahead guide to South Loop & Chinatown — 5 picks worth planning around

By Raj Singh · Published July 12, 2026.

The Museum Campus is the story this week: three of Chicago's marquee museums go free for Illinois residents on back-to-back days, right as the forecast turns hot — Tuesday tops out near 91, so the air-conditioning is a feature. Add a returning Lithuanian dance spectacle, a Fire match at Soldier Field, and a Chinatown block party, and the zone has a little of everything.

SUNDAY 7/12

Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival @ Wintrust Arena

Returning to Chicago after more than two decades, this festival turns Wintrust Arena into a living stage with thousands of dancers from across North America and Europe. Doors at 2pm. Grab a pre-show table at Chicago Firehouse Restaurant, a South Loop classic in a converted 1905 firehouse on Michigan.

TUESDAY 7/14

Illinois Resident Free Evening @ Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd waives admission for Illinois residents on a run of summer evenings — beat the heat with the belugas and the Amazon. Bring ID. Eat first: the Reuben at Eleven City Diner on Wabash is a South Loop staple.

WEDNESDAY 7/15

Illinois Resident Free Day @ Field Museum

SUE the T. rex is free for Illinois residents today — and the Adler Planetarium follows with its own free evening the same night, so you can pace a two-museum day. Bring ID. On the way in, do the right thing and get a Chicago dog from Kim & Carlo's cart out on the campus.

THURSDAY 7/16

Chicago Fire FC vs. Vancouver @ Soldier Field

The Fire host Vancouver under the lights at Soldier Field, 7:30pm. Pour a pre-match pint at Vice District Brewing on Michigan before you head to the lakefront.

FRIDAY 7/17

Dance to Chinatown! @ Armour Square Park

A free evening of music and dancing in Armour Square Park, in the heart of Chinatown. Then walk two blocks for the pork-and-crab soup dumplings at Qing Xiang Yuan (QXY) on Wentworth — some of the best in the city.

There's plenty more — browse more South Loop & Chinatown events on the neighborhood page.
