Jazzin' at the Shedd + Mezcla Media Shades of Chicago Short Film
Jazz on the lakefront, free films downtown, dinosaurs in Brookfield, a whole gator at Frontier, and the first street fest of summer.

It's 74 degrees and mainly clear in Chicago today — the kind of late-May evening that makes you forget every single day of winter. Tonight's picks range from lakefront jazz to local indie film to Latin dance, plus a look-ahead at the week's wildest dinner and the first street fest of summer. Let's go.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 27
Jazzin' at the Shedd @ Shedd Aquarium
The Shedd Aquarium's weekly summer jazz series is back on the lakeside terrace, and tonight's weather is basically custom-ordered for it. A rotating lineup of jazz bands plays against the backdrop of Lake Michigan and the downtown skyline while you sip drinks on the terrace. This is one of those Chicago experiences that makes you feel like you're getting away with something — world-class setting, chill vibes, no velvet rope.
The Museum Campus is easy to reach by bus (146 or 130) or a walk from Roosevelt on the Red/Green/Orange lines. If you're driving, the Soldier Field lots are your best bet. Grab dinner beforehand at Eleven City Diner on Wabash for a proper corned beef sandwich, or Yolk on South Michigan for something lighter. The terrace fills up fast once the music starts, so aim to arrive early. 74F and clear tonight — you won't even need a jacket.
Mezcla Media Shades of Chicago Short Film Showcase @ Chicago Cultural Center
Here's your free Tuesday night culture fix: Mezcla Media brings a curated showcase of short films by Chicago filmmakers to the Cultural Center at 6PM. The films center diverse Chicago stories and perspectives — exactly the kind of local storytelling you won't find at a multiplex. And the venue itself is a masterpiece: the world's largest Tiffany stained-glass dome, free to the public, right on Washington and Michigan.
The Cultural Center is steps from the Washington/Wabash L stop (Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple lines) and surrounded by the Loop's best post-show options. Walk over to Cindy's rooftop at the Chicago Athletic Association for cocktails with a Millennium Park view, or grab a slice at Giordano's on Jackson. Free admission, no tickets needed — just show up.
Dinos! @ Brookfield Zoo
Life-size animatronic dinosaurs have invaded Brookfield Zoo as of last week, and they'll be stomping around through the fall. We're talking full-motion T-Rex, Triceratops, and a dozen more scattered throughout the zoo grounds — the kind of thing that makes both five-year-olds and thirty-five-year-olds lose their minds. This is a perfect family outing or a genuinely fun date if you're both into it.
Brookfield Zoo is a straight shot on the BNSF Metra line from Union Station — get off at the Brookfield stop and it's a short walk. If you're driving, there's a big parking lot ($17). Go early to beat the crowds and the heat, then grab lunch at Grumpy's on Ogden Ave in Brookfield for solid diner food. Today's 74F and clear — ideal zoo weather.
THURSDAY, MAY 28
May Gator Dinner @ Frontier
If you've ever wanted to eat an entire alligator — and honestly, who hasn't — Frontier's monthly whole-animal dinner series is your move. Tomorrow night at 6PM, they're carving a whole gator tableside at communal tables in their Noble Square dining room. Frontier has built a reputation on these feasts: previous months have featured whole pig, lamb, and goat. The gator is the wildest one yet.
Frontier sits at 1072 N Milwaukee Ave in Noble Square, a block from the Division Blue Line stop. The neighborhood is stacked with good pre-dinner drinks — hit The Handlebar on North Ave for something casual. These dinners sell out, so check availability now. Tomorrow's forecast: 64F and overcast, perfect for an indoor feast.
THIS WEEK
Do Division Street Fest @ West Town
Summer festival season officially kicks off Thursday with Do Division, the scrappy West Town street fest that's been a locals-only favorite for years. Two stages of live music curated by Empty Bottle and Subterranean mean the lineup leans indie, punk, and delightfully weird. Division Street between Damen and Leavitt turns into a proper block party with local food vendors, cheap beer, and the kind of energy that only happens when a neighborhood throws its own party.
The fest runs Thursday through Saturday (May 29-31). Take the Blue Line to Division or Damen and you're right there. Big Star's tacos are a pre-fest classic, or hit Reno for a sit-down dinner before you dive in. Thursday's forecast is 71F and overcast with zero percent chance of rain — festival gods are smiling. Tonight's Do Division Pre-Party at Empty Bottle with Elizabeth Moen and G'nite is a solid warm-up if you can't wait.
